Sign me up
(Letter to the Editor ~ 03/17/11)
Dear Editor, I must compliment Bruse Desautels of Stratton on his letter in this column on March 8. It was intelligent and eloquent, by far the finest I have ready anywhere in this paper over the 11 years I have been a subscriber. It made me think of Fox News contributor Charles Krauthammer and reminded me of William F. Buckley, who in the 1960s, with a genius IQ and mastery of the English language, shredded debate opponents every week for years on PBS...

A tribute
(Letter to the Editor ~ 03/17/11)
Dear Editor, Floyd Hershberger was one of those unique individuals who made a difference--not only in the McCook community -- but to every individual whose life he touched. When we retired and moved 'back home' to Haigler 14 years ago, I was looking for a piano for our home. ...

Stirring memories
(Letter to the Editor ~ 03/17/11)
Dear Editor, Coleen Williams, who covers the evening news for ABC TV out of Kearney, stirred up memories for me. She interviewed a friend on the island of Oahu in Hawaii. They were discussing the tsunami that had traveled there due to Japan's recent earthquake...

Mercury, Jupiter continue their dance
(Column ~ 03/17/11)
Most of the action in the sky this week takes place in the evening. The smallest planet, Mercury, and the largest planet, Jupiter, are continuing their little dance in the west after the sun goes down. If you have been watching for the last few days Jupiter, which has held a place of prominence in the evening sky, is getting ready to exit, stage right and Mercury will be taking its place, at least for a while...

Bison senior to join Chadron State College track program (High School Sports ~ 03/17/11)
It was probably a foregone conclusion that Cody Goltl would run the hurdles for the University of Nebraska-Kearney track and field team. The McCook High School senior was likely to follow a somewhat Goltl family tradition and attend UNK. But Cody threw a little monkey wrench into future family gatherings when he opted to attend Chadron State College next fall and compete on the Eagles track squad... -
McCook softball women split two games with Montana squad (High School Sports ~ 03/17/11)
Not even a win in the second game of the Wednesday, March 16 double-header softball outing could draw a smile from McCook Community College head coach Liz Jacoby. An unhappy Coach Jacoby had just watched her MCC women beat Dawson Community College of Glendive, Montana, 7-5, to split the twin-bill Wednesday afternoon at the Jaycees Sports Complex. ... -

McCOOK, Nebraska -- Senator Mark Christensen's bill, LB698, which seeks to eliminate state mandated labeling requirements for ethanol-blended fuel, was prioritized by Senator Tom Carlson, March 10. And now, a (bad) word from our sponsor...
(Column ~ 03/17/11)
As fellow TV travelers riding our varied cushions as we wing our way around the dial (okay, that's more than enough of that), you and I have probably seen more than our fair share of advertising, from the simple to the elaborate, the surprisingly entertaining to the deadly dull...
