The McCook Elks club, according to the June 22, 1943 Gazette, spent $25 for 10,000 cigarettes to be handed out to the soldiers on the troop trains through the McCook Canteen at the depot. "Under a new national program the cigarettes are sold at five cents per package to the organizations making the contributions. No federal taxes are paid on the cigarettes."
