Comrade offers Purple Heart to late Sgt. Randy Matheny

The McCook City Council will be asked to officially declare that work has ended on $3 million worth of improvements at the waste water treatment plant, at its regular meeting Monday night, 7:30 at City Council Chambers in Memorial Auditorium. The improvements were made to comply with state and federal mandates that ordered the city to reduce the amount of ammonia that was released into the Republican River, or face hefty fines...

With gasoline climbing toward $3.60 or above, it's tempting to get the most out of each and every tank of gasoline. We've heard the drill before: Combine your trips, keep your vehicle tuned up and the tires correctly inflated, don't haul around unnecessary weight...

A proposed constitutional amendment that would boost state lawmakers' salaries by more than 83 percent, to $22,000, received first-round approval Thursday. But before you shout "Baloney!" or some less polite response, listen to a few other points. Voters won't have a chance to vote on the raise until 2010, and it won't go into effect until 2011, until after all of the current state senators are out of office, or at least have had to face the voters for the single second term they are allowed under the constitution.. ...

Sitting at the breakfast table I noticed a Cash-Wa Distributing semi-trailer pass by. Ann conjectured that they had been unloading supplies at the Senior Center. I am reminded that at last Council meeting, seniors present were stating that the Senior Center does not compete with businesses in town...

Since I opted not to teach summer school this year, this past Wednesday was my last work day until the middle of August. I'm going to fill up my leisure time with as much fun as possible, hopefully allowing me to recharge my batteries in time to engage new and returning students when college resumes in the Fall...
