Why bill is needed
(Letter to the Editor ~ 02/07/07)
Last year, Nebraska passed a law that permits people to carry a concealed weapon. However, local firearms ordinances are not consistent in all areas of Nebraska, thus creating a patchwork of laws and ordinances in the state regarding the possession, transport, and the concealed carry of firearms...

Great radio story
(Letter to the Editor ~ 02/07/07)
Thank you for the terrific article! ["Early radio days in McCook" (http://www.mc cookgazette.com/story/1188231.html)] Interestingly, the Gazette link was sent to me by Steve Lenwell, Roy's son, now living in Houston. I have enjoyed a 40-plus year career in the radio business but it all started at KBRL in the early '60s when I worked "summer relief" for a couple of summers while a student at UNL. ...

Soft approach doesn't work
(Letter to the Editor ~ 02/07/07)
I wanted to write you three weeks ago when the article first appeared in this paper telling of McCook's "soft approach" to city clean up. I can tell you it does not work. We've been trying it for three years in Indianola to no avail. What began as an effort by the Indianola City Council to clean up the more unsightly properties in town, has turned into an absolute shambles. It is an embarrassment and a humiliation...

"Just a sweetheart," Pam Wolford, his freshman English teacher at McCook High School told the Lincoln Journal-Star...

The Nebraska Army National Guard, which Matheny joined on March 28, 2005, has posthumously promoted Matheny to the rank of sergeant...

Melting snow, warmed by two days of 30- and 40-degree temperatures, cuts a stream through tire-packed ice on a street corner in McCook. Snow-melting temperatures may not last for long, as the forecast calls for snow, sleet and freezing rain through the weekend...

Shifting the truth
(Column ~ 02/07/07)
It took me a long time to learn how to properly drive with a standard transmission. I got pretty good pretty fast at improperly driving with one, largely due to a steep hill on my route to work. If I had to stop at the red light -- chanting please don't change, please don't change as I approached -- at the base of the hill, I was a multitasking marvel. ...
