COZAD -- The McCook High School volleyball team moved one step closer to the Nebraska Class B state tournament. In the Class B-5 district tournament Thursday night at Cozad, McCook defeated Holdrege 25-17, 25-17, 25-11. McCook (17-14) will play Grand Island Northwest in the district title match at 7 p.m. Friday...

DANA -- The McCook Community College volleyball team won its final regular-season match Thursday against the Dana College junior varsity 30-23, 28-30, 30-20, 30-22. The match was played at Dana College. Kayla Laird had 31 set assists, 8 kills and 14 digs for the Indians. Mary Gohl had 14 kills, 3 ace blocks and 19 digs...

In her third season leading the McCook Community College women's basketball team, coach Michelle Orton admits this is the most excited she's ever been to start a season. "I am just very happy with the way this school year has started academically and with the way the sophomores have provided leadership and helped the new players and this is one of the best incoming groups of freshmen I've had," Orton said...

McCook to host rematch against Holdrege in state playoff quarterfinal game Monday Round 1 of McCook vs. Holdrege went to McCook 17-7 Oct. 27 -- the final regular-season game. Round 2 will be played at 7 p.m. Monday at Weiland Field in McCook. There will be more at stake this time -- the winner advances to the Nebraska Class B state football playoff semifinals against the Aurora-Beatrice quarterfinal game winner...

Word has reached McCook of the death of John T. Harris, Sr., 96, a former McCook businessman who served in many leadership roles on the local and state levels. During his years in McCook, Harris was manager of DeGroff's Department Store and the founder of the Gro-Mo, the forerunner of Cornbelt Chemical Co. Harris, who was born in Opelika, Ala. on July 28, 1909, married Eleanor Suess of McCook in 1936...

Excitement is building because -- all of a sudden -- five area volleyball teams have reached the regional finals, with games tonight deciding which of the teams will advance to the Nebraska state tournament next weekend in Lincoln...

The young men of Red Willow County registered for selective service during the Vietnam era before lottery numbers and the ending of the draft, faced certain induction into the armed services...

Maybe it was because I had stocked up on adhesive bandages at some point in the past. Maybe it was because I had implemented the rule that no Band-Aids are to be used unless there is blood -- and it's flowing profusely. Regardless of the reason, Band-Aid purchases had been some time in the past. It wasn't until I mangled my own hand and needed several strips to control the blood loss, that I realized that my household was nearly out of Band-Aids and added it to my shopping list...
