Texting ban only a start in fighting distracted driving
(Editorial ~ 01/16/12)
We've already been convinced enough of the danger of texting while driving to outlaw the practice in Nebraska, and there is good reason. According to information gathered by Nationwide insurance: Fortunately, some teens are taking the lead in persuading their peers to shut up, put down the cell phone and pay attention to their driving...

Need term limits
(Letter to the Editor ~ 01/16/12)
I found it hard to believe that you would support Nebraska State Sen. Christensen and his self-centered legislation giving him and other state senators a $18,000 pay raise and to allow state senators to serve more terms in office. Term limits were put in place to allow new ideas and give individuals other then the political élite a chance to serve in the Legislature. ...

Offended by opinions
(Letter to the Editor ~ 01/16/12)
I read the McCook Gazette and am glad that we in Southwest Nebraska have an area newspaper such as yours available. Two recent opinions offended me so much that I decided to tell you how and why. The first criticized the paper, and especially Dawn Cribbs, as trying to force a false religion...

More from the early days of McCook (Column ~ 01/16/12)
McCook is a typical frontier town -- a hundred wooden buildings, cheaply built, small, many unpainted ... not the slightest pretensions of architectural symmetry ... on the north side of the railroad track. Not a vestige of shade protects them from the sun ... with temperatures this summer many days over 100 degrees, one day 108 degrees... -
McCook boys can't stop hot Hastings (High School Sports ~ 01/16/12)
Back to square one. That was the immediate plans for the McCook High School boys basketball team Friday, Jan. 13, after a 59-47 loss to Hastings in a battle of Class B teams at the McCook Senior High gym. The Bison slipped to 7-6 overall after suffering their third straight loss and fifth setback in the last seven games. ... -
Bison girls snap losing skid (High School Sports ~ 01/16/12)
Just what the doctor ordered. If McCook girls head basketball coach Jeff Ellis was a physician, he knew the perfect prescription for his team's ills heading into the Friday, Jan. 13 home game against Hastings. Ellis and his team found the right medicine -- a 44-30 win over the Tigers that snapped McCook's six-game losing streak... -
No lucky snow for shoppers on Friday the 13th
(Local News ~ 01/16/12)
McCOOK, Nebraska -- If it had snowed Friday the 13th, many Christmas shoppers in Southwest Nebraska and Northwest Kansas would have considered the day very lucky. But, it didn't snow. Shelter director stepping down, with regrets (Local News ~ 01/16/12)
McCOOK, Nebraska -- It's breaking her heart, and she struggles against the tears that always seem so close to the surface. It's quite possibly the hardest decision Lorie Prestes has ever had to make, but there's probably not much "deciding" left to it. Lorie has to leave her position as director of McCook, Nebraska, Humane Society's animal shelter or continue to suffer with asthma that leaves her with only 15 percent lung capacity at the end of the day... -
A perfect case for no labels
(Column ~ 01/16/12)
Most Americans, no matter which party they're in, want Congress to work together. They understand that extreme partisanship has led to gridlock and an inability to solve our problems. A perfect time to put aside partisan differences is during the President's State of the Union address. Instead of sitting by party on different sides of the aisle, we should sit together with no division showing political affiliation...
