Airport board recommends higher hangar fees
(Local News ~ 10/05/10)
McCOOK, Nebraska -- The Airport Advisory Commission approved a motion recommending to raise hangar rental fees at its scheduled meeting Monday afternoon at Heritage Senior Center. The motion was made by Richard Stull and approved on a 4-1 vote. The dissenting vote came from Mike Nielsen who believed the affordable fees were "something we're doing right. Making hangars reasonable encourages people to use McCook and the city makes sales tax on fuel and maintenance expenses as a result."...

Residents receive scam credit union texts
(Local News ~ 10/05/10)
McCOOK, Nebraska -- Several people received text messages on their phones late Saturday night warning them that their Federal Credit Union bank card had been deactivated. They were instructed to call a certain number to have the card reactivated. According to K.R.D. Federal Credit Union, this message is a scam. The only common denominator seems to be the cell phone carrier as both members of K.R.D. and non-members received the text messages...

The Vietnam Wall
(Column ~ 10/05/10)
The notice in the Gazette states that the traveling Vietnam Wall will be staging through McCook tomorrow. It has been doing its patriotic duty in Norton, Kansas, and is moving to Cody Park in North Platte. Last week, Ann and I drove to Norton for a great meal with friends at a new Mexican restaurant. We then went to the site of the traveling memorial to spend a poignant, moving evening...

Let the new folks pay
(Letter to the Editor ~ 10/05/10)
I hope to respond to Editorials and articles in the Gazette last week regarding the proposed municipal facility. How do you pay for a 5.2- million dollar project with a $3,750,000. bond sale? Simple, you take $1,750,000 from others. In November 2009, the city admitted they had already set aside $1,000,000 in sales tax money for this project. I assume since then, they have (or plan to) set aside another $750,000...

Back in time
(Letter to the Editor ~ 10/05/10)
As I read the history of that grand structure, the Keystone Hotel, I couldn't help but think that McCook was a more important and vital city in 1922 and prior years than it is today. The same can be said of America. No, they don't build 'em like that anymore; it was built to house people instead of existing as a sterile office building...

We should all sign up for new warning system
(Editorial ~ 10/05/10)
They say bad news travels fast, but sometimes it's not fast enough to warn people of danger. People have done everything from blowing rams' horns to making smoke signals and ringing bells to get their neighbors' attention when disaster approaches. Technology had advanced to the point that Republican River Valley could be warned by telephone -- until the lines went down, that is -- and still more than 100 people were killed...
