Western Nebraska should support new state fair location
(Editorial ~ 08/17/10)
There's a joke -- OK, maybe there's a trace of bitterness behind it -- that people in Lincoln and Omaha think the state ends at Grand Island. Out here, of course, we think of Grand Island of being "back east." Still, Western Nebraska should embrace the new state fair grounds in Grand Island, and fair officials are counting on it. ...

Moratorium?
(Letter to the Editor ~ 08/17/10)
Rules and regulations in the NRDs simply do not apply to some. Example: In 1970, my father drilled an irrigation well in the SW1/4 9-4-35, Eden precinct, Hitchcock County, and flood irrigated approximately 185 acres until 1985 at which time he retired and ceased to irrigate. ...

What profit?
(Letter to the Editor ~ 08/17/10)
What value do ye get per $1? Wherefore do ye spend money, for that which is not bread? Alcohol, drugs, tobacco, body painting, piercing, tattoos, lotteries, sports and such like? Woe unto him that giveth his neighbor drink ... at the last it biteth like a serpent and stingeth like an adder ... ye shall not make any cuttings in your flash ... nor print any marks upon you ..."...

Does Christianity need a good name?
(Letter to the Editor ~ 08/17/10)
I hardly think so. It derives from the son of God, Jesus Christ, and there is no name above that name, so why all this fuss about "Has Christianity lost its good name?" As far as Anne Rice quitting the Catholic Church, one cannot but suspect that the fact that she wrote fictional stories about vampires, a superstitious pagan belief, perhaps her sudden default from Catholicism has led her from the fantasy world of pagan vampires to the real world of modern paganism. She will have lots of company...

One happy president
(Column ~ 08/17/10)
Lately President Jimmy Carter (for whom I voted) has to be the happiest man alive. At the moment President Barack Obama (for whom I did not vote) has surpassed him as the worst American President--ever! President Obama, our far left secular progressive leader just now reaffirmed his support for the proposed mosque at ground zero. ...

Overlooked car taxes help county budget
(Local News ~ 08/17/10)
McCOOK, Nebraska -- The outlook for the 2010-11 budget for Red Willow County, Nebraska, improved last week when county officials discovered that $325,000 in motor vehicle taxes had been overlooked and not included in budget proposals. Six McCook High School wrestlers graduated -- and survived -- last month at one of the most grueling summer tests in the United States. The Bison matmen attended the annual Eternal Warrior Wrestling Camp, a faith-based camp held each July in Trego, Montana. The McCook contingent included Skylar Kalinski, Jake Fahrenbruch, Jesus Gauna, Kyle Groshong, Keldon Osterman, and Rusty Sullivant... -
Open Class act
(Letter to the Editor ~ 08/17/10)
I have enjoyed for over 20 plus years working in the open class division of the fair. I had fun in the old building even if it was dark, dirty and extremely hot, but it has been better in the air conditioned, well-lit and clean building. I looked forward to seeing new and experienced exhibitors for our yearly visits. I loved working with the judges and learning so much from them...
