Christmas has been over for a month, and it's that time of year again already -- no not Valentine's Day -- flu season. Gothenburg school were closed for a time this week because of the flu, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that Nebraska's level of flu activity went from "sporadic" to "regional" because two or more regions of the state reported significant numbers of flu cases...

It has been years since I worked the radios with air-traffic in a busy place like central Florida and on south to Miami. Many of the readers of this column don't particularly like it when I write about politics. In fact, a good friend of mine was lamenting to me just the other day about how we're inundated with presidential politics eleven full months before the election and how we're going to continue to be twenty-four, seven until the election in November...

McCook wrestlers hosted the six-team McCook Duals Friday. Grand Island Northwest won the event going 5-0. Alliance, Wray, Colo., and McCook all went 3-2, North Platte was 1-4 and Scottsbluff was 0-5. Grand Island earned 38 points and Alliance had 36 in round 1. McCook defeated Scottsbluff with 57 points and Scottsbluff had 27. Wray won over North Platte 66-9...

SOUTHERN VALLEY/HAYES CENTER -- Alma and Hayes Center's boys basketball teams will go head to head Saturday at Cambridge for the RPAC championship. Alma earned the move into the championships after pushing by Southern Valley 59-48 in Friday night's semifinals. Hayes Center added another win to a 14-0 season record after defeating Hitchcock County 63-44...

CURTIS -- Four area wrestling teams took the top five in team scores in the Medicine Valley Invitational Friday. Southern Valley won the event, with Medicine Valley following in second, Cambridge in third and Chase County taking fourth. Perkins County place sixth, Hitchcock County was ninth and Dundy County-Stratton was 11th. Wauneta-Palisade finished in 12th place and North Platte JV was 16th...

McCook's eighth grade boys basketball teams went 1-1-1 Thursday against Holdrege. McCook fell to Holdrege in the A team game 41-27, but tied in the C game 21-21. The Bison returned in the C game and won 30-6. Justin Terry led the Bison in the A game with 12 points and Joel Baker had 7. "We did a much better job of executing our offense," said Bison coach Bill Ramsay. "We need players to look to score and continue to improve our rebounding."...
