Bison girls clipped by Cozad
(High School Sports ~ 01/13/06)
COZAD -- McCook's girls fought back in the second half of Thursday's game at Cozad, but came up short 40-38. "The girls made an outstanding effort in the second to come back and get in position to win the game," said Bison Coach Barry Schaeffer. "We had chances throughout the game to win it at the free throw line and could not capitalize. On a positive note, in the past three games we have done a better job in the turnover area."...

Story recalls boy's view of McCook air base years (Local News ~ 01/13/06)
NORFOLK -- The January-February edition of "Nebraska Life" includes a story by former McCook resident Dick Budig, who remembers growing up in a neighborhood lost at times in an eery darkness and patrolled by frightful air raid wardens. Budig, who was a young boy during World War II, eight years old in the winter of 1943/1944, reminisced about air raid drills in McCook. "All I know is that a couple times a month, mom would announce that tonight was blackout night," Budig writes... -

In recent years, McCook has had more convenience stores than most other towns of similar size. Up and down U.S. Highways 6-34 and 83 passing through town on B Street, customers could choose from two Casey's locations, two Gas 'n Shop stores and and Kabredlo's shop...

Strong opposition
(Letter to the Editor ~ 01/13/06)
As a non-resident land-owner of Hayes County, we have been very interested in the School Bond Issue there. It would be very interesting to know how many of those who voted for the School Bond were, are, or ever will be land or property owners in Hayes County, and how many of them will still be living in the county in five years...

Water alternative
(Letter to the Editor ~ 01/13/06)
The Jan. 12 McCook Gazette quoted State Sen. Baker: "'There's been a lot of talk about interbasin transfer,' Baker said. 'But not only would that option cause regulatory problems, it would be a difficult move based on the conservation restrictions on the Platte River Basin. In addition, the Platte River west of Elm Creek is already over-appropriated.'"...

Playing 'old school' video games
(Column ~ 01/13/06)
The rain is falling. It's cold outside. Everyone has actually cleaned their room. What to do for the day? One option is to drag out all the old video games systems that have been gathering dust in the basement. I'm still in a firm believer in the original systems and own an Atari system and the first Nintendo set-up. These 25-year-old systems may be all that is available in your house if you're like me and refuse to give into these "fly by night" systems such as PlayStations and XBoxes...

Tony Purvis to be a Wildcat (College Sports ~ 01/13/06)
McCook senior commits to Kansas State Tony Purvis did not get much sleep Thursday night -- he had a good reason though. Thoughts of getting a full-ride NCAA Division I football scholarship offer danced in Purvis' head and stomach all night. Friday at the KICX/KBRL radio studios on Rich Barnett's morning show, Purvis announced that he intends to sign a letter of intent to play football at Kansas State University from the highly-touted Big 12 Conference -- a league that also features the likes of Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and NCAA national champion Texas.. ...
