Red Willow County commissioners Monday morning hired the jail consultant firm they felt was more familiar with Nebraska jail standards. Commission Chairman Earl McNutt said he was more comfortable with Allied Correctional Services, (which made a presentation Dec. 13), than with ACI-Boland, whose representatives told commissioners Monday morning that Red Willow County's study would be their first jail study in Nebraska...

The city of McCook is beginning to feel the pressure of the March 1, 2006, deadline for completing its fresh water treatment plant. While the plans for the treatment plant is moving forward without a hitch, the disposal of the waste generated from the treatment could cause some problems for the city...

Red Willow County commissioner Leigh Hoyt made the motion Monday morning to approve a $300,000 loan for a Colorado firm that wants to start a helicopter kit company in McCook, then smiled and said, "And I want a ride in the first one built." Hoyt and fellow commissioners Earl McNutt and Steve Downer unanimously approved the loan to Pawnee Aviation following testimony during a public hearing and discussion during their regular session...

CULBERTSON -- Culbertson firefighter Richard Sensel said wind-whipped flames consumed about 200 to 300 acres of pasture grass, river bottom, downed trees and cornfield stubble southwest of Culbertson on Monday afternoon. "In those 60-mile-an-hour winds, there was no stopping it," Sensel said. "It was moving so fast, we couldn't keep up with it."...
