Bison girls backhand Lincoln Christian, other eastern foes

LINCOLN, Neb. — McCook High girls made a triumphant return to Lincoln as seniors Izzy Clause, Roslyn Wiemers and Brooklynn Gillen all went unbeaten through Lincoln Christian events last weekend.

Following a 12-0 dual sweep of the Crusaders Friday, McCook outscored seven eastern Nebraska teams including perennial Class B contender Grand Island Central Catholic on Saturday.

“Good outing and played some great competition,” coach Matt Wiemers remarked. “Always a bonus to get to have the opportunity to compete against the East schools.”

It’s always fun when McCook and Omaha Duchesne face off, especially when Wiemers’ girls a 1/2 point victory for the Class B state team title in 2019.

Sure enough, the teams were an even 2-2 on Saturday though those three Bison seniors dominated Duchsene.

Roslyn Wiemers and Clause won their No. 1 doubles match, 8-0 while Gillen delivered an 8-1 victory at No. 2 singles.

All three girls stormed through a gauntlet of Kearney Catholic, Lincoln Pius, Platteview and Duchsene.

McCook’s younger varsity players all conquered tests from Pius and Platteview.

The Bison are already playing another tournament today at Lexington. Watch for results on Thursday.
