GOTHENBURG, Neb. — McCook’s great eight varsity wrestlers teamed for three titles, six places and more than 100 points at Thursday’s Southwest Conference championships.

“It was a good last tune up before districts next week,” coach Nick Umscheid said as his Bison finished fifth among eight teams. “I tell the guys that it’s their last dress rehearsal before the post-season.”

Freshman John White set the tone at 106 points when he defeated 30-match winner Diego Juarez of Ogallala in their semifinal collision.

White went on to a 7-2 finals win over team champ Miunden’s Dylan Hernandez (27-16) — meaning he topped two tough foes with a combined 57 wins this season.

Junior Tristan Campbell clearly appears rehearsed and ready for another strong post-season.

The returning Class B state finalist pinned all three 144-pound foes on Thursday with no match lasting two full periods.

Junior Gabe Roberts completed the trio of Bison SWC champions. He also stuck three consecutive challengers and not even finalist Caydon Scroggin of Cozad could last into the third period.

Junior heavyweight Spencer Steinbeck nearly delivered a fourth Bison championship but he encountered 35-1 Even Lutkemeier from Minden.

“All of our guys got two or three quality matches,” Umscheid observed. “Most importantly, we came out healthy which is what everybody wants.”

McCook will now focus on the district meet at Crete next week.

Umscheid hopes some other Bison will be healthy for this Class B state qualifier. More details appear next week.
