Bison a little too hole-y to beat Colby, but still get big wins

McCOOK, Neb. — Whoever said it’s all about team obviously had no idea what he or she was talking about.

Just ask McCook coach Nick Umscheid following Thursday’s home dual against the Colby, Kan., Eagles.

Unofficially, the Bison were 30-24 winners based on actual matches.

Yet four forfeits due to injuries or illness gave the Kansans a 48-30 “victory.”

So time to lessen the focus on all these team team team comments:

“At this point, we’re trying to get as many indivdual wins as possible,” Umscheid said while thinking about future seedings for conference and district tournaments. “With four open weights, it’s tough to win a dual against quality opponents.”

The Colby Eagles brought some Kansas-state rated wrestlers like No. 2 Juan Salcido facing Bison freshman John White at 106 pounds.

McCook fans and teammates roared when White made a late escape — but that one final point was not quite enough as Salcido triumphed 3-2.

“It was a great match that someone had to lose. John really didn’t lose...he just ran out of time,” Umsheid observed.

White still owns a strong 26-6 record after his Lexington Invite championship Saturday.

“John’s just very driven, always focused, always working and no messing around,” N.U. added. “I’m not sure I have ever seen him smile.”

Vince Mashek fans could smile when the freshman dominated his first varsity home match under that big Bison spotlight.

Mashek’s 3:26 win ignited a string of four consecutive pins with top Bison wrestlers Gabe Roberts, Davien Hanson and Spencer Steinbeck all joining in the fun.

“Vince’s match was an evenly-matched match,” Umscheid proclaimed without any hint of feeling redundant. “I think the home crowd watching gave him a little extra ooompf.”

Steinbeck was one Bison returning from missing almost all of January due to illness and a hamstring injury.

“That was a state-rated wrestler from Kansas he faced,” Umscheid said. “I’m not sure what would have happened if it went five minutes or more, but Spencer got it done quickly.”

The Bison led 30-24 until those final four open weight forfeits.

Umscheid hopes juniors Tate Schafer and Kalen McCorkle will hopefully be ready for the district in two weeks.
