McCook freshman earns first at Higgins wrestling invite
LEXINGTON, Neb. — Freshman John White’s 106-pound championship highlighted a tough McCook boys 12th-place finish at the John Higgins Invite on Saturday.
The Bison totaled 65.5 points with White scoring 24 during three big wins. He improved to 26-5 this season when he won a 6-2 finale over 25-14 Lane Weichert from big Class B school Bennington.
Junior Tristan Campbell captured third overall at 144 though he did suffer his first loss this season: a 10-5 semifinal match with 30-6 Allen Diaz from host Lexington.
Howver, Campbell (33-1) responded with a 17-0 tech fall over 32-win foe Maddox Gilligan from Gothenburg. He clinched third when he blacked Tyler Roberts from Scott City, Kan., by a 3-0 final.
Junior Gabe Roberts reached fifth place at 190 when he scored four big wins which shows the toughness of this tourney. Tate Schafer (13-11) and Trenton Raile (19-15) also earned wins for the Bison.
