McCOOK, Neb. — McCook High’s first-year bowling team split a dual with experienced and talented Arapahoe Warriors on Thursday at TJ’s Family Fun Center.

Coach Jana Sides provided plenty of insights:

“McCook girls varsity faced the biggest challenge of the year so far and struggled.

Recently, several of the girls have switched approaches to “fingertip” release, and have been working intensely to perfect their form. It requires a switch to different bowling balls, timing, and swing.

Kaela Hinze and Leni Henderson contributed solid 153 and 155 games, respectively. The Arapahoe girls had a phenomenal meet and dominated 19-2.

All congratulations to them.

McCook girls will continue to work on their skills before meeting Arapahoe again in districts.

McCook boys varsity won 21-0.

That home advantage really paid off-- we even had a cheering “student section” of a dozen or so fans besides the dedicated parents and families in attendance.

High game posted was Jalen Collicott (211). Jalen averaged 196 for the tournament! Kolton Koetter averaged 191; Landen Kmoch averaged 194, Layton Winters averaged 186; Zach Hinze averaged 181.

Because Arapahoe did not bring JV teams, McCook’s JV teams bowled each other in a “friendly exhibition match.”

Corbin Shaw posted the high game of 169, and averaged 167. Sutton LaBrie averaged 154, and Blake Willis rolled a 148; Kreighton Barger (who recently changed his approach to 2-handed) rolled a 141, and Nathan Barger (who also recently changed to 2-handed) averaged 135. Most of the girls posted PRs.

These guys are putting in the time and effort to learn and improve. They are working together as a team which is the most encouraging part.

In fact, the high Bakers game was posted by JV-- together they bowled an impressive 186 (that beat any of the Varsity Bakers games)!

“I am so proud of these bowlers!,” coach Sides concluded. “They are so dedicated and have put in extra time and effort to improve.

Mostly, though, I am so proud of their team spirit. It is disappointing not to be the one on varsity, but I appreciate that these students understand that as a TEAM we grow stronger when we rotate positions so everyone gets experience.”

Our next tournament is Saturday. It will be an all-day affair in Lexington. McCook will have another opportunity to face incredibly tough teams from the eastern part of the state, including several from Class A schools. Coach Sides is excited about the opportunity because “our teams rise to the level of competition.”
