Horizon Bank donates to McCook Fire Department training facility, AKA ‘Area 51’
McCOOK Neb. – Representatives from Horizon Bank recently visited the McCook Fire Station to present a generous $10,000 donation to enhance the local training facility.
Training is a top priority for McCook firefighters, who participate in mandatory monthly sessions focused on fire and EMS protocols. These sessions are open to volunteers within their mutual aid district, promoting a culture of collaboration and shared knowledge.
The department has established a dedicated training site known as “Area 51,” equipped with various props, including a trailer home able to be reconfigured for different training exercises and specially designed roofs for practical exercises. Currently, they are constructing a multilevel simulated structure to provide firefighters with a more realistic training environment. The donation will improve the emergency responders’ training facility. The facility serves multiple departments, including those from rural areas.
Fire Chief Marc Harpham expressed gratitude for the donation, stating, “This funding will improve our training facility and enhance the skills we develop during our sessions.” He shared that Firefighters will practice navigating confined spaces and attic scenarios. The training also involves self-rescue techniques, and they plan to convert some Conex boxes into simulators where we can safely start fires, familiarizing firefighters with heat conditions and smoke.
In addition to supporting the McCook Fire Department, Horizon Bank has donated to the YMCA, the McCook Inclusive Playground, and the McCook Pantry.
