NSHS participating in Norris Day event at Museum of High Plains

Lincoln, Neb. - On Sunday, January 5, at 1PM CST, a George Norris day program will take place at the Museum of the High Plains in McCook in remembrance of George Norris’ life and legacy. Sponsored by the Norris Institute, the Museum of the High Plains, and Nebraska State Historical Society, Dr. Peter Longo, professor of political science at the University of Nebraska–Kearney will present “George Norris: Revisiting Non-partisan Possibilities”. The program will specifically review the major and enduring contributions of George Norris and with special consideration of revisiting of non-partisan governance.

Based on the 2006 Nebraska Revised Statue § 84-104.04, January 5 marks George Norris Day as a day of remembrance for one of the most influential political leaders in American history. More specifically, it was George Norris’ influences that passed the nonpartisan unicameral legislative body for the State of Nebraska (1937),the development of the Tennessee Valley Authority and electricity in the rural areas of the nation, passage of the twentieth amendment to the United States Constitution, and many other policies still felt today.
