Southwest Nebraska Leadership Institute explores local economic development
McCOOK, Neb. - Members of the Southwest Nebraska Leadership Institute (SWNLI) participated in an educational Economic Development Day in December, gaining firsthand insight into the key drivers of growth and innovation in McCook. The daylong event featured interactive sessions, panel discussions, and tours of local projects and businesses, showcasing the collaborative efforts that contribute to the region’s success.
The day began with an engaging session on community leadership led by Jeff Gross. Participants then visited the McCook Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) and attended a panel discussion featuring Charlie McPherson, Director of MEDC; Randy Korgan, Residential Lending Manager at McCook National Bank; and Adam Siegfried, owner of Coppermill Steakhouses. The panel explored economic development strategies, the critical role of housing, and the unique opportunities and challenges of doing business in McCook compared to other Nebraska communities.
While at the Keystone, the group toured the fourth floor, home to an innovative coworking space and podcast studio designed to nurture creativity and entrepreneurship.
Next, attendees embarked on a bus tour directed by Amanda Engell, Director of Housing Development for MEDC. We toured one of the Parkview Addition townhomes. This is the latest housing project funded by the Rural Workforce Housing Funds. Amanda then led the group through the new North Pointe residential development, highlighting the importance of diverse housing options in attracting and retaining talent in the region.
Over lunch, Amanda shared the impact of Beautify McCook, a group dedicated to enhancing the community’s visual appeal and sense of pride, and how to get involved.
The group then visited The Yard for an entrepreneur panel featuring Tyler Loop, owner of Loop Brewing and The Yard; Terri Gray, co-owner of Whitaker’s Furniture; and Andrew Ambriz, owner of Embers Bakery & Cafe.
These local business leaders shared candid stories of resilience, community support, and the importance of shopping locally.
The day continued with tours of ACME Print Co. and Henhat, led by Jared Muehlenkamp and Darrin Harpham. Participants gained an inside look at local printing capabilities and the intricate process of custom orthotics, discovering the diverse operations within the ACME building.
The event concluded with a leadership session facilitated by Lorrie Mowry at McCook Community College’s McMillen Hall. Mealtimes, generously sponsored by Wagner Auto Group and Walmart, offered valuable networking opportunities among participants and board members.
