McCOOK, Neb. - Recently, over fifty people took to Facebook to answer the question: “What gift would you send someone to remind them of McCook?” The responses reflected a deep nostalgia and local pride, showcasing this vibrant community’s unique offerings.

Topping the list of beloved gifts were items from the local bakery Embers, formerly Sehnert’s. Many respondents expressed their affection for the establishment, suggesting treats such as stollen, peanut brittle, and the famous maple long johns that have become a staple for locals and visitors alike.

Mac Drive-In also received ample love, with suggestions ranging from merchandise to iconic burgers. The classic American diner seems to hold a special place in the hearts (and stomachs) of McCook residents.

Several responses showed school spirit, with a few suggesting apparel from McCook Community College and McCook Public Schools. This reflects not only school pride but also a close-knit educational community.

In addition to these popular items, other notable mentions included local favorites like Taste of Texas, and Knowlen and Yates.

Interestingly, cinnamon toothpicks made the list – not once, but twice! This quirky local product harks back to memories of Harmon’s Fire Pix, a candy produced in McCook for nearly 50 years.

Santa Claus Lane also evoked fond memories for several commenters, showcasing the connection between local traditions and the holiday spirit.

Here’s a look at some of the comments shared on Facebook:

– “Stollen and peanut brittle from Embers.”

– “McCook Community College T-shirts from 1993.”

– “Merch from Mac’s Drive-In!”

– “Cinnamon Toothpicks!”

– “A Jiffy burger, something from Mac’s, and a Long John from Sehnert’s.”

– “A subscription to the Mccook Gazette”

One poignant message came from a 90-year-old resident who recalled moving to the area in 1984. She fondly remembered days spent shopping at J.C. Penney’s and Clapps, reinforcing the notion that McCook is a place filled with memories and experiences that create lasting connections.

As the holidays approach, it’s clear that the gifts that remind us of McCook are more than just physical items. They represent cherished moments, local heritage, and the community’s enduring spirit. Whether it’s a sweet treat from Embers or a nostalgic burger from Macs Drive-In, the sentiment behind these gifts speaks volumes about what it means to be a part of the McCook community.
