McCOOK Neb. – In a celebration of safety and community spirit, Valmont Industries in McCook hosted its inaugural Light Parade and Ugly Safety Vest Contest on Tuesday, Dec. 17. Organized by the Valmont STOP (Safety Through Our People) Committee, the event drew enthusiastic participation from employees and local community members, including judges from the McCook Fire Department, Community Hospital, the Gazette, and McCook Chamber of Commerce.

Lights were dimmed as a stream of industrial vehicles adorned with lights, wrapping paper bows, and various creative decorations paraded through the company grounds. Judges carefully lined up with scorecards to evaluate the parade entries in categories such as creativity, use of lights, holiday spirit, and the overall quality of the float.

The event aligns with a growing recognition of the importance of fun in the workplace. A recent article in Forbes highlights how integrating enjoyable activities can enhance employee morale, productivity, creativity, and overall job satisfaction. Researchers note that when employees experience enjoyment, their brains release dopamine – a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and motivation – which boosts their learning and problem-solving capabilities.

The excitement culminated as the winning team of the Light Parade, consisting of Rhonda Refior, Dani Jones, Brenda Grube, Deanna Harrison, and Sierra Ortiz, was announced. Their innovative float earned them a complimentary lunch courtesy of Valmont. Additionally, Deanna Harrison was recognized for her standout ugly safety vest and will receive a paid day off from work.

With the success of this inaugural event, Valmont’s STOP Committee looks forward to planning future celebrations, promising an even more engaging experience next winter.
