Presidential Scholars Program combats Nebraska’s brain drain

Tuesday, November 26, 2024

The University of Nebraska’s new Presidential Scholars Program is a groundbreaking initiative designed to retain Nebraska’s best and brightest students. By offering a full ride—including tuition, fees, housing, meals, books, supplies, and a $5,000 annual stipend—the program is a game-changer for high-achieving high school seniors across the state. It represents a bold and forward-thinking strategy to address a pressing issue: Nebraska’s struggle with “brain drain,” the exodus of talented young people who pursue opportunities elsewhere, leaving gaps in the state’s workforce and cultural fabric.

High school seniors who score a perfect 36 on the ACT (or 1570–1600 on the SAT) are automatically eligible, while students scoring 32–35 on the ACT (or the equivalent SAT score) can compete through a rigorous application process. Eligible students must maintain a 3.5 GPA, complete 24 credit hours annually, and be first-time freshmen enrolled full-time at any University of Nebraska campus. The high standards ensure that the scholarship supports individuals capable of excelling academically and contributing meaningfully to their communities.

An investment in Nebraska’s future

The Presidential Scholars Program is more than just a scholarship; it is an investment in Nebraska’s future. The program’s design enables students to focus on their studies and take advantage of transformative opportunities like internships and research, without the financial stress that often accompanies higher education. The flexibility of the scholarship—applicable to any University of Nebraska campus—encourages students to explore fields ranging from agriculture and medicine to technology and the arts.

Governor Jim Pillen and University of Nebraska System President Jeffrey P. Gold deserve credit for their leadership in establishing this initiative. President Gold’s call to action—“We want you on Team Nebraska”—underscores the state’s commitment to creating an environment where its brightest minds can thrive and innovate. The program’s emphasis on cultivating talent at home aligns perfectly with Nebraska’s goals of strengthening its workforce, enriching its communities, and preserving its unique character.

We urge students, parents, and educators to recognize the vast opportunities this program offers. Let it serve as a reminder that sports are not the only pathway to full-ride scholarships; academic dedication and intellectual curiosity are equally valuable. Programs like this demonstrate that Nebraska is willing to invest in its young people and that staying here can be as rewarding as venturing elsewhere.

The Presidential Scholars Program is a beacon of hope for Nebraska’s future, fostering a culture where academic achievement is celebrated and supported. As these scholars step into leadership roles in the years ahead, the state will undoubtedly reap the benefits of this bold and visionary investment.
