MARICOPA, Ariz. - On Thursday, Aug. 29, 2024, our mom, wife, and grandma, Janet June Thompson (Bahl), aged 78, affectionately called “Nena”, of Maricopa, Ariz. (formerly of Kearney, Neb.) passed away after a 12-year battle with primary progressive aphasia and Alzheimer’s.
Nena was born July 18, 1946, in McCook, Neb. to June and Leopold “Bus” Bahl. She graduated from McCook High School in 1964 where she met Ronald Dean Thompson. They married in March of 1966. Together, they raised their two daughters, Stephanie Lynn and Lesli June, in Kearney, Neb. Nena worked at the grocery store “Hinky Dinky” until it closed. Nena loved reading, golfing, dogs, glasses, movies, coloring, music, driving, Husker football, and being with her family. She was also the most loving grandma. Nena was a devout member of the Catholic church her whole life.
Nena leaves to mourn her loving husband Ron; daughters, Stephanie McManus and Lesli Strubel and her husband James Strubel; granddaughters, Gracie June Strubel, Katie Kay Strubel, and Rosie June Sierks; grandson, Kurt Dean Luce; niece and nephew, Kathleen Spresser and Bruce Capell; best friends, Gloria and Dave Mefford; and her dog, Lola.
Nena is now reunited with her parents, older brother Jack Bahl (d. 2013), older sister Judy Cappel (d. 1970), niece Janell Cappel, (d. 2017), and her grandson, Asher James Strubel (d. 2017).
Our family wants to thank Hospice of the Valley and the community of Maricopa for the care, support, and devotion our Nena received.
