Nebraska crop report: Harvest nears completion
LINCOLN, Neb. — Nebraska farmers had 5.7 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending Nov. 17, 2024, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Despite progress in harvest, dry conditions continue to challenge soil moisture and winter wheat development across the state.
Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 62% short or very short, while subsoil moisture came in at 73% short or very short, leaving fields parched as the year’s end approaches.
Corn harvest reached 97%, slightly ahead of the five-year average of 93% and last year’s 94%. Sorghum harvest also advanced, with 90% completed, close to the 92% five-year average.
Winter wheat conditions reflected the impact of dry weather, with 27% rated poor or very poor. Only 6% of the crop was deemed excellent, while 91% of winter wheat had emerged, lagging behind last year’s 100% and the 99% average.
Pastures and rangelands also struggled, with 59% rated poor or very poor and only 15% considered good to excellent.
Data for the report was gathered through the USDA Farm Service Agency, UNL Extension Service, and other sources statewide.
