Unbeaten Husker women light up South Dakota for 113
Sioux Falls, S.D. - Nebraska smashed a school record with 20 three-pointers on its way to one of the top-five scoring performances in school history, as the No. 21 Huskers rolled to a 113-70 women's basketball win over South Dakota in front of a sellout crowd at the Sanford Pentagon on Saturday night.
Nebraska, 4-0, hit 63.1 percent (41-65) from the field - the seventh-best percentage in school history, including 58.8 percent (20-34) from three-point range, while going a perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line on its way to just the sixth game with 113 or more points in Husker history.
Freshman point guard Britt Prince led the Big Red with a career-high 23 points on 10-of-13 shooting, while dishing out four assists, and sophomore forward Natalie Potts added a career-high-tying 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the floor. Both Potts and Prince hit a pair of three-pointers, while Potts pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
Seniors Kendall Moriarty (13) and Kendall Coley (12) added career highs in both points and three-pointers made. Moriarty went 3-for-4 from long range, while Coley went a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond the arc - all in the fourth quarter.
All-America candidate Alexis Markowski also did plenty of damage with 14 points, while dishing out a career-high seven assists. Markowski led 10 Huskers who produced two or more assists on the night, on the way to 33 assists as a team - the fourth-highest total in school history. Markowski also got in on the Big Red three-point barrage by burying 2-of-3 from beyond the arc.
Nine different Huskers hit at least one three in the game, including sophomore Logan Nissley, who finished with nine points on a trio of three-pointers, while making her first start of the season. Alberte Rimdal closed with seven points, including a three, while making her second start, while freshman Amiah Hargrove added a pair of threes to finish with eight points.
Nebraska also posted a whopping plus-22 rebound margin (41-19) on the night, limiting South Dakota to just two offensive rebounds.
The Huskers got off to a fast start, jumping to a quick 7-0 lead, but South Dakota rallied to take a 15-13 lead midway through the first quarter. The Big Red answered to hold the Coyotes without a field goal for the final 5:25 of the quarter, ending the period on a 16-3 surge to take a 29-18 advantage to the second.
Nebraska did everything except put the game away in the second quarter, putting together a 14-3 surge early in the second on its way to a 60-33 halftime lead. The 60 points marked the third-highest first-half total in school and marked the second-most points the Huskers had ever scored in a half on the road - trailing only a 61-point effort at Idaho in 1993.
The Big Red outscored the Coyotes, 24-19 in the third and 29-18 in the fourth to complete the 113-70 victory.
USD's Grace Larkins led all scorers with 28 points to go with five rebounds and six assists, while Alexi Hempe added 14 points including four three-pointers. Carley Duffney add 10 points on 3-of-3 shooting from long range, as the two teams combined to hit 30-of-64 threes. The 30 combined threes were the most in a Nebraska game in school history, surpassing the 27 hit by Nebraska and Iowa earlier this year at the Big Ten Championship Game in Minneapolis on March 10.
