OMAHA, Neb. — Nebraska State Patrol troopers apprehended a driver Thursday evening following a wrong-way pursuit on Interstate 80 in Sarpy County.

The incident began around 4:35 p.m. when a citizen reported a vehicle with a flat tire traveling eastbound near Gretna.

A trooper located the Mazda 3 near mile marker 432 and initiated a traffic stop. However, the driver, later identified as Steven Salinas, 32, of Elmwood, turned the car around and fled westbound on the eastbound shoulder of I-80.

The pursuit lasted less than a minute as the vehicle struck a streetlight and came to rest in a ditch. Troopers arrested Salinas without further incident. He faces charges including flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, and driving under the influence with a blood alcohol level of .15 or higher, in addition to multiple traffic violations.

After receiving medical clearance at CHI Health Midlands, Salinas was lodged in Sarpy County Corrections.
