McCOOK Neb. - It’s been over three years since Jeff Whitaker and Terri Gray decided to go into business together, transforming Whitakers Furniture into a dynamic hub for home furnishings in McCook, Nebraska. With a large selection of furniture in stock and the ability to special order items, customers can access an extensive range of choices that meet their needs and preferences. They also offer free delivery, ensuring customers receive their purchases quickly and conveniently.

The journey began in the wake of a family tragedy. When Jeff’s father, Bill Whitaker, passed away on June 13, 2021, the future of the three-generation family business hung in the balance. His brother Mark wanted to retire, and Jeff contemplated closing the doors for good and auctioning off the store. During this uncertain time, former employee Terri Gray, who had taken care of Bill during his decline, reached out as a potential buyer. However, Jeff had another idea.

“Two weeks before the transfer, I approached Terri about being my partner,” said Jeff. “And just like that, we became 50/50 partners on July 1, 2021.”

Their partnership blossomed over lunch when Jeff pitched the idea to Terri, who immediately expressed her enthusiasm. “We went to Terry Ellinger’s office to formalize everything,” Jeff recalled, laughing. “He didn’t even use a computer—just a piece of paper! We might still have it somewhere as a memento of our partnership’s beginning.”

The pair swiftly embarked on an ambitious remodeling project, stripping away outdated paneling and carpeting while keeping the store open. The four-month renovation was challenging, but Jeff and Terri were determined and not alone. “We had a small Whitakers village of family and friends who made it happen,” Terri shared.

Terri shared that they had some divine intervention: “The store has transformed into a living, breathing, life-changing place, and it took many hands to make that happen.”

They restocked the store with various furniture options and created an inviting atmosphere that customers love. Their synergy is palpable, and Jeff and Terri note the benefits of their collaboration. “The business had been running things the same way for years, so it needed new blood,” Jeff observed. “Terri brings a different perspective, and we both have an aggressive approach to the business.”

Terri added, “There’s a nice balance between us. It’s like yin and yang.” Their camaraderie has only strengthened since becoming business partners, with Jeff noting, “We haven’t argued at all. We’ve tackled a lot together, from removing carpet to sanding floors.”

One significant change they implemented is a non-commission sales style, allowing everyone who walks through the door to receive exceptional customer service without the pressure of sales quotas. This approach has fostered a welcoming environment where customers can relax and make decisions at their own pace.

Terri described her decision to join the partnership as an exciting new adventure. “I’ve always had a spirit for business and wanted to work for myself. This opportunity felt right,” she said.

According to Terri, one of the most rewarding aspects of their partnership is the ability to give back to the community. “We get to bless a lot of people by being here together. Recently, we delivered used furniture to someone starting fresh and without anything. It feels great to share our blessings with others,” she said.

As Jeff and Terri continue to innovate and grow Whitakers Furniture, their partnership is a testament to resilience, friendship, and the enduring spirit of family business.
