Wild Ass Soap honored by Chamber
McCOOK, Neb. - The Wild Ass Soap Company, owned by Justin and Kaylynn Harris, has been awarded the Quarterly Honor Business Award by the McCook Chamber of Commerce. This recognition highlights the Harris family’s commitment to quality products, sustainable practices, and community engagement.
Justin Harris shared insights into the company’s journey since its inception in 2020. Originally started as a hobby during a time of national reflection on health and food systems, Wild Ass Soap Co. has evolved into a thriving small business. From their homestead just outside McCook, the Harris family, now in their fourth and fifth generations of Nebraskan roots, cultivates much of their food and produces natural soap and skincare products using locally sourced animal fats.
Harris emphasized the importance of local sourcing in their operations. “The fat used for our soap comes from pigs that roam outdoors, which allows them to produce vitamin D. This benefits their health and enhances the quality of our products,” he explained. Using locally sourced tallow and lard harkens back to historical soap-making practices, offering both environmental benefits and support for local agriculture.
Harris noted the challenges of supply chains and stressed the significance of maintaining strong local partnerships. “We believe in supporting regional farms and producers, creating a network that strengthens our community,” he said.
One of the company’s most exciting recent developments is its collaboration with Side Show Spirits, a Lincoln distillery owned by former McCook resident Cody Schmick. Together, they have created a unique soap line featuring rye whiskey in an “Old Fashioned” soap. “I’m a big fan of their products,” Justin remarked, recalling how the collaboration came to fruition. “Cody suggested we use his whiskey, and we thought it would be fun to create something that celebrates a classic cocktail. The final product has great fragrance and character, incorporating elements like orange bitters and char from whiskey barrels.”
The partnership with Side Show Spirits exemplifies the Harris family’s approach to innovation while staying rooted in their local community.
Justin also shared insights into their family’s values and lifestyle, prioritizing health and simplicity. The Harris family grows various crops, including hemp, potatoes, and tomatoes, alongside their soap-making endeavors. They advocate for healthy living and emphasize the role of nutritious ingredients in their products.
In addition to discussing their business achievements, Justin highlighted the importance of community support. He acknowledged small towns’ challenges and underscored the need for vibrant, interconnected local economies. “Without the support of our community, we wouldn’t be where we are today,” he stated.
