Walt was born Sept. 7, 1946 in Trenton, Neb. to Leonard and Aileen (Thomas) Dye. On Sept. 29, 1963 Walt married Carol Woods (Ault) of Stratton. To this union, they had two daughters, Robbin and Sandy. They divorced a few years later. Walt married Barb Dewey of Trenton on Sept. 14, 1969. Together they had one son, Don Dye.
Walt was a “Jack of all trades”, before obtaining his health care administration degree in 1996 from Central Community College in Hastings. He worked in road and residential construction, was a certified electrician, a volunteer EMT and firefighter. However, most people knew Walt and Barb from the family-owned Dari-Creme on the top of the hill in Trenton from 1978-1994.
After selling the business Walt and Barb moved to Mitchell, Neb. and he found his calling as a Nursing Home Administrator working for Rural Health Development (RHD) from 1997 up until his retirement. His employment with RHD included serving as Administrator at Mitchell Care Center before helping manage the RHD facilities in Western Nebraska, Eastern Wyoming, and South Dakota. Walt was a great mentor for several administrators that still serve today. When Walt wasn’t working, you could find him on the golf course with Barb, or his family and friends. He always made time for his grandkids and great-grandkids and enjoyed family gatherings, playing cards and talking sports. In his later years, Walt especially enjoyed his winter vacations spent in Arizona or Hawaii.
Walt is survived by his daughters Robbin (Jeff) Moore and Sandy (Jerry) Alexander of Bartley and son Don of Gering; eight grandchildren. Cody (Melissa) Moore, Staci (Josh) Wermers, Derek Moore, Jerrell (Jessica) Alexander, Jesse (Brittany) Alexander, Jake Alexander, Emory Dye, and Alyssa Dye; 11 great-grandchildren: Cora, Aubree, and Autumn Moore, Joe, Rylan, and Jasper Wermers, Millie, August, and Elsie Alexander, Lyda Alexander, and Haven Dye; and sister Mona (Bob) Holbrook of Norman, Oklahoma.
Walt is preceded in death by his wife, Barb, his brother Marvin, parents Leonard and Aileen and granddaughter Jennifer Moore.
