Mural project focuses on community

McCOOK Neb. – Seeking community engagement and collaboration to create a new mural, Local artist Karrie Steely will host a mural planning meeting at the McCook Art Guild on Nov. 9, at 6 p.m. In a recent conversation with the McCook Gazette, Steely expressed excitement about the potential for creativity but acknowledged the need for flexibility in the planning process.

“I’m not quite sure how this will unfold,” Steely said. “It depends on who’s involved.” Unlike the previous mural project, which featured numerous community meetings, this initiative aims to attract individuals interested in learning about mural creation without requiring extensive outreach efforts.

Steely emphasized the educational aspect of the project, aiming to teach community members about creating murals.

She hopes to engage those who desire to learn but need more experience. “I want to continue that piece of it--being educational,” she noted, highlighting the importance of empowerment in community building through the arts.

The meeting will focus on gathering a group of creative individuals interested in brainstorming ideas for the mural. While Steely recognizes that many people have strong opinions and visions for what McCook represents, she noted that the process would not involve soliciting ideas from the wider public as extensively as before. Instead, she aims to build upon insights from earlier meetings to shape the new mural’s concept.

Reflecting on the first mural, Steely reminisced about the diverse perspectives shared during the community discussions. Many participants felt strongly about incorporating local historical figures like George Norris or elements such as trains. However, Steely explained that the mural ultimately aimed to capture the essence of these concepts metaphorically rather than literally.

The upcoming meeting offers an opportunity for creatives to contribute their talents—whether in painting, design, fundraising, or idea generation – to refine the mural’s concept. Steely emphasized the importance of leadership in this collaborative process, hoping to weave various ideas into a cohesive vision.

Steely also wanted to ensure everyone felt heard during the planning process, even if only some ideas could be realized. As the meeting approaches, Steely is hopeful that new faces will join the conversation, including those who may have felt uncertain about participating in the past.

“It’s still a community-based mural because we’re inviting everybody to the table,” Steely reiterated, underscoring her dedication to fostering an inclusive environment for artistic expression. The mural’s vision includes its placement in the Creative District. Steely believes this move will enhance the area’s cultural vibrancy and increase the likelihood of securing funding for the project.

When asked about the longevity of murals, Steely explained that their durability often depends on the building owners’ agreements and the quality of materials used. The professional muralists involved in past projects indicated that their work could last up to 20 years.

As the meeting date draws closer, Steely encourages community members eager to participate in the mural planning process to attend and share their ideas. Free pizza will also be provided, creating a welcoming atmosphere that will inspire creativity and collaboration.

This new mural project promises to be a collective effort, reflecting the diverse voices and talents within the McCook community.
