GREAT BEND, Kan. - Danny Lee “Dan” Zimmerschied, 75, passed away surrounded by his three daughters and first grandson on Nov. 1, 2024, at Brookdale Senior Living, Great Bend, Kan. He was born on Dec. 12, 1948, in Emporia, Kan., to Carl and Isabelle (Cappel) Zimmerschied.
Dan was a 1966 graduate of Great Bend High School. He was then drafted into the United States Army and proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. He was presented the National Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with 2d OLC, Expert M-16-Rifle, Vietnam Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, one Service Stripe, Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 DVC, and six Overseas Service Stars for his service. After returning state side, he spent many years in Great Bend before living in New Mexico and Colorado. Dan returned to Kansas over 20 years ago, serving as the canteen manager at VFW Post #3111 and most recently as the manager of the Sunflower Diversified Services Recycling Center.
A very social person, Dan was extremely active member of the VFW Post #3111, loving time spent with his fellow military brothers and veterans. He was an avid sports fan, enjoying horse races, supporting the Dallas Cowboys, Kansas City Chiefs and Royals, Denver Nuggets, and KU teams, but most importantly, supporting his grandchildren at their many sporting events. In his younger years, he enjoyed fishing and bowling, and recently enjoyed the social interaction of Facebook and online poker.
Survivors include three daughters, Julie Spray and husband Chris of Great Bend, Jeri Mick and husband Scott of Guthrie, Okla., and Jessica Brose and husband Bradd of Sapulpa, Okla.; six grandchildren, Stefan, Maddox and Mersadie Spray, Bryant and Blakelee Mick, and Hudson Brose; and numerous loved ones, including extended members of the Zimmerschied, McDaniel and Cappel families.
He is preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Mike Zimmerschied.
Visitation will took place from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, 2024, with family receiving guests from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., all at Bryant Funeral Home. Memorial service was held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4, 2024, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Chaplain Jeffrey Owen presiding. Inurnment followed at Golden Belt Memorial Park. Military honors were presented by Fort Riley Honor Guard.
