Dear Editor,
I was excited to see my photo with Milt Johnson published just before my 97 birthday! This was a picture fumished by the Bureau of Reclamation and the photographer was L.C. Axthelm. This photo was published in the McCook Gazette Friday, October 18, 2024, page 5 above the heading “Happy Days of the 1960’s” and yes those were happy days.
The following Friday, October 25, 2024, another story about “Happy Days of the 1960’s” appeared with a story crediting the photo to the brother-in-law of Milt. As the story states, Milt’s wife was Shirley, but her maiden name was Axelson, not Axtheim, so the photographer was not Milt’s brother-in-law.
The story of the out-of-state hunter standing with Milt was fascinating! Again, that was me standing with Milt and I have lived in McCook my entire life, except 1945-1946 when I was in the U.S. Navy.
Milt worked for the railroad in the engine service department and then owned McCook Flying Service with his wife. He also built a couple of houses in McCook. I was a neighbor, so I do know about him. And I know about me.
That is me with Milt, not an out-of-state hunter!
And Happy Days are still here!
John C Hubert,
McCook
