McCook Cares continues to share bread; giveaway celebrates one year

McCOOK, Neb. — Hosted at Cornerstone Fellowship Church, McCook Cares will mark the first anniversary of its free bread giveaway this Wednesday. The initiative has become a vital resource for residents, providing bread and baked goods to those in need every week.

Over the past year, the program has grown and evolved, bringing together dozens of volunteers committed to serving the community.

The bread giveaway operates through a network of dedicated volunteers. According to Weskamp, “It all rotates in and out. I would say there are three delivery drivers—Mikey, Chuck, and Larry—who take the bread to various locations.” The bread is delivered to several local organizations, including the Sharing Place, the Pantry, and the Senior Center, ensuring that those who need it most can easily access it.

The program’s popularity has led to a high demand for the bread. Weskamp noted that people often wait in line for over an hour before the doors open. “In about six minutes, it’s pretty well picked through,” she shared.

Once the bread arrives on Tuesdays, volunteers sort through the items before distributing them to recipients. “We sort it so it’s easier for everyone,” Weskamp explained. The bread is considered “day old,” but much of it is still within its expiration date, and the variety includes everything from loaves to pastries.

The initiative began after the previous distribution location could no longer accommodate the program. Weskamp stepped up to find a new home for the bread, securing a partnership with Cornerstone Fellowship Church.

Alongside the bread distribution, the community shares additional resources. “In the summertime, we bring zucchini, onions, and tomatoes; we have a sharing table,” Weskamp added. A resident even brings eggs every other week, creating a sense of community support that extends beyond just bread.

Before opening the doors each week, the group gathers to share prayer requests andoffer a moment of reflection. “We have had so many answered prayers in this room,” Weskamp said, expressing how meaningful this aspect of the program is to those involved.

Participants in the program do not have to verify their income; they sign a release form acknowledging that they understand the bread is considered day old. This approach ensures that anyone who needs assistance can receive it without unnecessary barriers.

As McCook Cares celebrates this significant milestone, community members are encouraged to join. With heartfelt thanks to all the volunteers and supporters, Weskamp looks forward to continuing this essential service for years to come.

The bread giveaway takes place every Wednesday morning at 8:30 a.m. at Cornerstone Fellowship, 402 West 5th St., at the east entrance.
