Top 20 Cougars ruin MCC's Saturday at home in four sets
he McCook Community College volleyball team dropped a four-set match Saturday to No. 17 Western Nebraska. The Cougars won 25-17, 25-21, 20-25 and 25-13.
The Cougars came out early to take an 8-2 lead in the first set and rolled to the 25-17 win then went up 6-0 in the second before MCC responded with a 6-1 lead and took its first lead of the set at 10-9. The set was tied at 13 and the Lady Indians took a 20-19 lead but the Cougars ended the set on a 6-1 run.
“We competed again – and I feel like we read the same chapter yesterday – so we semi-competed in three of the four sets,” said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza.
The Lady Indians out came stronger in the third set as the two teams were tied at 8, 11 and 14 before MCC went on a 4-0 run to lead 18-14 and went on to pick up the 25-20 win.
Western Nebraska took an early 8-1 fourth set lead and never trailed to win the match.
“The fourth set, again, we’re just not putting it together,” said Kobza. “I don’t think it has to do with skills, I think the skills are a reflection of our mentality and our mentality just wasn’t there right today.”
Freshman Ailynn Wright (Sterling, Colo.) and sophomore Caylin Barnett (McCook) both had 10 kills to lead the offensive attack. Wright added three digs and Barnett led MCC with 16 digs, to go along with two blocks and a service ace.
Sophomore Emerie Rios (Sterling, Colo.) had eight kills and a block and Romina Martinez Castro (sophomore, Cochabamba, Bolivia) had five kills, eight digs and an ace.
Sophomore Rowan Tribelhorn (Yuma, Colo.) had three solo blocks, two assist blocks, two kills and an ace. Freshman Ella Verts (Marshall, Mo.) had two kills, two blocks and two digs
Cibeles Bothwell (sophomore, Spring, Texas) had eight digs, two assists and an ace.
Freshman Megan Walker (Haxtun, Colo.) had 20 assists five digs and a service ace while Abby Thompson (freshman, Bison, S.D.) had 13 assists and 10 digs.
Western Nebraska improves to 8-1 in the region standings and 26-7 overall. The Cougars will face first-place Northeastern Junior College Wednesday at Scottsbluff.
MCC goes to 3-5 in the region and 20-10 overall and will close out the regular season on the road Friday and Saturday. On Friday MCC faces Trinidad State (21-8, 4-4) in what could be a match which determines third place in the standings and for the Region IX Tournament. On Saturday MCC travels to La Junta, Colo. for the season finale against sixth-place Otero College (6-26, 0-7)
