McCOOK, Neb. — A driver was trapped for a time after his westbound pickup collided with a tractor and was then struck by an ambulance eastbound ambulance on Highway 6-34 west of McCook Saturday evening.

According to Red Willow County Sheriff Kevin Darling, a westbound tractor equipped with lights was crossing a bridge when a westbound pickup truck, traveling at highway speed, struck the tractor's rear hitch, trapping the pickup driver inside.

While witnesses tried to extricate the victim, a Trenton Rescue Squad ambulance approached the scene while transporting another patient, but the driver was unable to see the person attempting to stop traffic with a flashlight and collided with the already damaged pickup.

Numerous vehicles illuminated the scene until emergency units arrived and began rerouting traffic while the victim was cared for and the scene investigated.

Darling expressed thanks to McCook Dispatch, McCook Fire and Rescue, Western Rural Fire, and the Nebraska State Patrol for their assistance with the accidents.
