Bison girls' duo running back to Class B state

OVERTON, Neb. — McCook junior Emma Cappel can earn a Class B state medal to go with last year’s ‘C’ top 10 after qualifying again during Thursday’s B-3 cross country district.

Cappel captured eighth place overall with her time of 20:42.53 while classmate Brecken Gale claimed the last individual spot at 15th.

Gale ‘s 21:27.49 was seven seconds faster than nearest challenger Grace Uttecht, a Lincoln Pius X Thunderbolt soph.

Both Bison advance into the Nebraska State Championships at Kearney Country Club on Friday, Oct. 25. All area state qualifiers and the race schedule will appear on mccookgazette.com.

The McCook girls finished fifth overall which means they won’t return their lineup to state.

Powerhouse champ Norris only totaled 13 points with four of the six fastest finishers.

Senior Kendall Zavala won the championship at 18:50.54. Titan teammate Atlee Wellman was second with her 18:57.22 time.

Norris, Lincoln Pius X (38) and York (53) qualified girls teams. Lincoln Standing Bear wsa fourth (75 points).

The top 15 individuals also qualify to state.

McCook’s next finisher was senior Leni Henderson in 38th place (24:45.5), senior Megan Miller 39th (24:47.09) and senior Maryann Kassner 40th (24:50.37).

Senior Ella Malcolm completed the Bison girls’ group in 43rd (26:05.4). The Bison outran both Crete (106 points) and Beatrice (108).

McCook High’s boys ran the same course but competed in a B-4 district.

The Bison were eighth overall (164 points) as junior Blake Rodewald placed 30th to lead them at 19:27.6.

Freshmen Axel Blomstedt (43rd/20:46.2), Warren Witt (45th/21:18.85) and Kevin Wolfe (46th/21:51.09) were the next Bison finishers.

Senior Josh Wilkinson was 48th (21:52.68) and junior Jack Bates 49th (22:20.66).

Hastings’ 19 points won the B-3 team title ahead of state-qualifying Gering (35) and Beatrice (37). Tiger senior Austin Carerra (16:20.32) was also individual champ.
