Nebraska hospitals responding to IV fluid supply shortage caused by storm

Thursday, October 10, 2024

LINCOLN, Neb. — Nebraska hospitals are facing disruptions in IV fluid supplies due to severe flooding at a key manufacturing facility in North Carolina. Baxter Manufacturing, which produces 60% of the IV fluids used nationwide, suffered extensive damage from Hurricane Helene, leading to a significant slowdown in production.

The Nebraska Hospital Association (NHA) is working closely with local, state, and federal partners to navigate the shortage, which is impacting hospitals and healthcare services across the state. In coordination with Baxter and the federal government, efforts are underway to restore production levels.

The NHA has expressed support for hospitals making adjustments in response to the disruption, including potential changes in service offerings. “We will continue to monitor the situation daily and provide resources to help hospitals make the best decisions for their patients,” said Brian Noonan, Senior Director of Communications and Education at NHA.

For updates, Baxter is posting information on its website.
