MCC golfers make six-stroke drop to reach tourney top four

LAMAR, Colo. – The McCook Community College golfers had a six-stroke improvement in the second day of the Lamar tournament but finished fourth among the five Region IX teams competing. Eastern Wyoming finished first, 32 shots better than second place Otero.

“It was a disappointing event for the guys this week,” said MCC Coach Grant Case. “Windy conditions Thursday made scoring very difficult, but everyone did their best to hang in there.”

The Indians opened play Thursday shooting a first-round 317, tying them with Northeastern Junior College and came back to shoot a 311 Friday.

“Nothing really was going anyone’s way Friday, but the guys were able to improve the team score by six shots,” said Case.

MCC sophomore Andrew Brown (Wollongong, Australia) provided MCC’s highlight for the tournament when he went four-under par over his final five holes to finish in a 12th place tie with a 10-over 150. He shot a 73 Thursday and a 77 Friday.

After missing the previous tournament with an illness, sophomore Ross Donachie (Narin, Scotland) had rounds of 78 and 77 to finish at 155. Freshman Cole Graham (McCook) had rounds of 80 and 82 to finish with a 162.

Sophomore Chance Gambini (Las Vegas, Nevada) shot an 86 Thursday and came back with a 77 Friday. Freshman Thatcher Ommert (Montgomery, Texas) had rounds of 92 and 80.

Eastern Wyoming’s Joshua Chapman was the only golfer to finish the tournament under par and claimed the individual title with a two-under 138.

MCC wraps up the fall portion of the season-long schedule Thursday and Friday hosting the Region IX field at their home course.

“All of us are looking forward to closing out the fall season next week in McCook at Heritage Hills,” said Case.
