McCOOK, Neb. — Multiple calls to McCook dispatch on Wednesday afternoon reported a car and semi-truck accident on Highway 83, just north of McCook and near the Work Ethic Camp. The Red Willow County Sheriff’s office responded to the scene, along with assistance from the McCook Police Department for traffic control.

The accident occurred when the driver of a northbound Ford Explorer noticed a tire warning light and briefly pulled over. After deciding to check the issue, the driver attempted a U-turn from the right shoulder, unaware of an approaching semi-truck traveling in the same direction behind her. Despite locking the brakes and swerving left, the semi-truck could not avoid the collision just inside the southbound lane.

The impact caused significant damage to both vehicles. The front of the Ford Explorer struck the passenger side of the semi, damaging its front axle and fuel tank. The rear of the Ford then collided with the side of the semi, causing the vehicle to slide before coming to rest. Fortunately, both drivers wore seat belts, likely preventing more severe injuries.

While the driver of the semi was unharmed, the driver of the Ford Explorer, uncertain of her condition, was transported to McCook Community Hospital for further evaluation. McCook Ambulance responded promptly, and evidence at the scene, including skid marks and video footage from the semi, supported the accounts provided by both drivers.

Traffic on Highway 83 was rerouted for several hours as a tow service removed the damaged semi-truck. Sheriff Darling expressed his gratitude for the quick assistance from Work Ethic Camp personnel, the McCook Police Department, and McCook Ambulance.

In his statement, Sheriff Darling reminded drivers of the importance of caution when encountering emergency vehicles at accident scenes.

“Pay attention to the safety of everyone on site. What you are doing at that moment is not as important as the safety of those trying to serve others,” he said, urging the public to avoid distractions and follow directions from emergency personnel.
