INDIANOLA, Neb. - Paul E. Newberry was born at the St Catherine Hospital in McCook, Neb. on March 30, 1947 to Doran and Nellie (Jussel) Newberry. He graduated from high school and attended one year of college.

Paul married Margaret “Jane” Uerling on Jan. 28, 1971 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in McCook. Paul and Jane purchased the home at 223 Noth Fourth Street in Indianola and have lived there for 53 years. Paul’s first love in life was his family, but cattle and agriculture came in a close second. He spent his life farming and ranching. Paul was a butcher at the Uerling Locker for 17 years. He worked at the KJ River Range and was known as the “Cow Whisperer” while employed as a ranch hand for Ruggles Angus for over 17 years.

In his free time, Paul enjoyed deep sea fishing. He also had a passion for hunting, whether it be for coyotes with his hounds and a plane, or for coons with his coonhound, Fang.

Paul passed away Thursday afternoon, Sept. 26, 2024 at CHI Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Neb. He was 77 years of age.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Doran and Nellie Newberry; an infant sister, Ida Marie Newberry; niece, JoAnn Evans; and his mother-in-law, Florence Uerling.

Survivors include his wife, Jane (Uerling) Newberry of Indianola; daughter, Chris (Newberry) Puls and husband, James of Lincoln, Neb.; son, Mike Newberry and friend, Kriscia Sandoval of Lexington, Neb.; grandchildren: Alysha Puls, Aaron Puls, and Florence Newberry; sister, Charlene (Newberry) Banzhaf and husband, Harold; father-in-law, Jerry Uerling; sisters-in-law, Joellyn Davidson and husband, Tom, Lisa Chester, and Tracy Ruggles and husband, Rick; brother-in-law, Nicholas Uerling and wife, Sandra; his best friend, Jack Tuttle who was like a brother to Paul; as well as nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. at Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook; Paul’s family will greet friends from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. A Rosary will follow the visitation, beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning, Oct. 2, 2024 at St. Catherine Catholic Church in Indianola. Burial in the St. Catherine Cemetery will follow services.
