First annual wiener dog race set to take place at Heritage Days
McCOOK Neb. - Matt Coulter is leading the charge for the inaugural Wiener Dog Race during this year's Heritage Days. This event promises to be both entertaining and beneficial for the local community. The race, set for Saturday, Sept,21, will serve as a fundraiser for the McCook Humane Society.
"I can't honestly answer how many registrants there are because they are registering at different places — the Chamber, the Shelter, and online through our website," said Lorie Prestes, Director of the Humane Society. "They're even coming in by mail! This is so awesome."
Coulter, who recently transitioned from the Parks Department to the Transfer Station for the city of McCook, expressed his enthusiasm for getting involved with Heritage Days this year. "I know that there are a lot of Wiener Dogs in town," he said. "Hopefully, it's a big turnout."
The Wiener Dog Race will feature five racing divisions:
Little Smokies (Ages 6 months to under 3 years)
Hot Doggers (Ages 3, 4, and 5 years old)
Low Riders (Ages 6, 7, and 8 years old)
Senior Sausages (Ages 9 and older) and Special Needs(Any Age)
Wiener Wannabees (Any age, must be part Dachshund)
The racecourse will measure approximately 25 yards long on a straight "grass" track. Each division will award prizes and bragging rights to the winners. Coulter added, "I ordered some trophies for it; they're pretty funny."
Participants must adhere to leash laws; each dog will require a rabies tag and a waiver. Registration is $10 per dog, with all proceeds benefiting the McCook Humane Society. "Remember to bring water for your Doxie and, of course, a camera!" said Coulter.
Local resident Kersten Cook plans to enter only one of her three Dachshunds, Charlie, "We've done a couple of practice runs, just having him run back and forth, nothing much. I don't know if he will win or not, but he's a fast little guy," she remarked.
With community support and enthusiasm building, the Wiener Dog Race is shaping to be a delightful addition to the Heritage Days festivities. A full day of fun awaits as everyone gathers to cheer on their furry friends while raising funds for a great cause.
