McCOOK Neb.- As McCook Heritage Days approaches, anticipation builds for what promises to be a highlight of the event: Oktoberfest featuring the Czechlanders Polka Band at Norris Alley Saturday, September 21, from 5 to 8 p.m.

Tyler Loop, owner of Loop Brewing Company, along with Head Brewer Kevin Cochran, offered insights into the beers that attendees can expect during the festive celebration.

Cochran, who has been brewing a selection of traditional German beers for about a month and a half, will primarily serve Oktoberfest and Hefeweizen during the festivities. He explained the historical significance of Oktoberfest, noting that it was traditionally the last beer brewed in the spring before summer heat made brewing unfeasible.

“This beer is like a celebration of the kickoff of the brewing season,” he said. “Back then, they would put it in deep cellars to keep it cool, and when fall arrived, they pulled it out to mark the beginning of new brewing.”

What distinguishes German beers, according to Cochran, is their strict adherence to tradition and specification, much like French wines. “You can’t just call any beer a Kölsch; there are rules about where it can be brewed,” he revealed.

This commitment to authenticity extends to his brewing process, as he employs a slow carbonation method to create a more genuine brew for the festival.

In addition to Oktoberfest, visitors will have the chance to taste the Hefeweizen, a refreshing summer beer that complements the autumn festivities. “The Hefeweizen has a quick turnaround,” Cochran explained. “It’s all about getting that summer brew out as soon as possible.”

Other offerings at the event will includethe popular **Viking Blonde, a refreshing Yard-er-Rita, and a root beer for those looking for non-alcoholic options.

Cochran noted that this year’s event is particularly significant for Loop Brewing Company, as they recently entered the Top Hop Cup, a competition celebrating the best beers brewed with Nebraska hops. “This year was our first time entering, and we took runner-up,” Cochran proudly stated.

Behind the scenes, Cochran emphasized the science of brewing, mentioning that sanitation is 90% of the job. He also highlighted the advantage of having a microbiologist in the family, noting that his wife’s extensive knowledge of yeast propagation has been invaluable.

“When I first took over, she helped me understand the yeast curves needed to create a quality brew,” he shared.

The Viking Blonde, is a local favorite and was created for Cochran’s wife. “She loves spruce beers, so I created one for her,” he explained. “It quickly became our most popular offering, and I’ve brewed more Viking Blonde than any other beer.”

With a commitment to quality and tradition, Loop Brewing Company's participation in McCook Heritage Days promises to deliver an authentic taste of German brewing. Attendees can look forward to celebrating the arrival of fall with a sampling of crafted beers and the joy of community spirit.
