BROKEN BOW, Neb. — McCook High’s cross country girls took a top three place at the Broken Bow Invitational following one early wake-up call on Saturday.

Junior Emma Cappel captured third place with her time of 21:16.54 behind only Bow’s Ashlyn Schauda (20:55.03) and Ainsworth’s Emma Kennedy (21:04.49).

Junior classmate Breckyn Gale was ready with another super No. 2 Bison runner performance. She placed sixth overall (21:41.33) which helped McCook total 47 points and outrun four other teams.

Gothenburg was first (30 points) and Bow second (39).

Ainsworth was fourth (52 points) and Cozad a distant fifth (94).

Other Bison grinding to this team finish were senior Megan Miller in 21st (24:11.27), senior Maryann Kassner (34th/25:31.64) and junior Jenna Wilkinson (26:49.9).

Coach Tom Sughroue provided these insights:

“We ran well again. We had a very early departure 5:15 a.m.

I always worry about how we will perform with early departures and that everyone will make the bus.

Everyone made the bus and we ran well. Our times weren’t the best of the season, but it was that way for every team. Times just weren’t as fast.

The girls had a very nice team finish. T

Our top 6 were rounded out with Leni Henderson and Ella Malcom. As the season progresses if we can move a few girls up the pack we will finish much better as a team.

The boys ran well, we have ran better! The boys were once again led by Blake Rodewald and Axel Blomstedt. Again our times were not as good as the were a week ago. But it was the same for every team. Most were around a minute slower. There are many factors that play into how fast a course is. we raced well within the race, just not as fast.”

The Bison host their invite Thursday.
