MCC volleyball team sweeps league opener in Lincoln

LINCOLN, Neb. – The McCook Community College volleyball team opened conference play Friday with a 3-0 sweep over Southeast Community College. The 25-13, 25-11, 25-12 win came in Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference play.

“This was a good game all around for our team,” said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza.

Sophomore Caylin Barnett (McCook) led the attack with 12 kills and added eight digs, one ace and an assist block. Romina Martinez Castro (sophomore, Cochabamba, Bolivia) had seven kills, eight digs and two aces. Freshman Charlee Russick (Berthoud, Colo.) was credited with five kills and seven digs.

Rowan Tribelhorn (sophomore, Yuma, Colo.) had six kills, three assist blocks a solo block and an ace. Freshman Ella Verts (Marshall, Mo.) had a solo and an assist block.

Freshman Megan Walker (Haxtun, Colo.) led MCC with 32 assists and added four digs, three assist blocks and a solo block.

“We were able to move around our line up around and the girls didn’t miss a beat,” said Kobza. “Everyone came in and did their jobs and that is what we have been working for.”

Sophomore Emerie Rios (Sterling, Colo.) along with freshmen Jaedin Johns (Arthur) and Ailynn Wright (Sterling, Colo.) all recorded one kill.

MCC improves to 10-3 on the season and 1-0 in the NCCAC. The Bobcats fall to 2-8 overall and 0-2 in the Nebraska Conference.

The Lady Indians continue in the NCCAC with a home match Wednesday at 6 p.m. against Central Community College. The 10-4 Raiders are ranked No. 22 in the latest NJCAA D2 Top 25 rankings.
