MCC golfers finish sixth at first tourney of season

RIVERTON, Wyo. – The McCook Community College golf team started the Region IX schedule with a sixth-place finish in the two-day Central Wyoming Tournament which concluded Friday.

Eastern Wyoming claimed the team title with a one-over par 577. Central Wyoming was second, 22 shots back and Otero Junior College was third trailing the leaders by 31 strokes. The Lancers had four golfers in the top eight.

After shooting an opening round 324, MCC had a 330 on Friday to finish sixth among the six teams.

Central Wyoming’s Tyler Ewell had rounds of 66 and 71 to finish with a seven-under par 137, one shot ahead of Eastern Wyoming’s Taiko Sugawara to claim individual honors.

MCC freshman Xander Sellman (Iola, Kan.) posted the low two-day score for the Indians and finished in a tie for eighth place. He had rounds of 75 and 74 to finish at five-over par.

Sophomore Andrew Brown (Wollongong, Australia) came back from a first-round 79 with a 74 on Friday to finish at +9. Freshman Thatcher Ommert (Montgomery, Texas) was at +21 for the tournament, sophomore Ross Donachie (Narin, Scotland) was at +22 and freshman Cole Graham (McCook) at +33.

Sophomore Chance Gambini (Las Vegas, Nevada) posted an 81 on Thursday but did not finish the tournament.

Next week the Region IX field will be in Torrington, Wyo. for the Eastern Wyoming Tournament at Cottonwood Golf Course Thursday and Friday.
