McCOOK, Neb. — The new McCook High floor definitely got broken in McCook volleyball girls all over their four-set opening win over Lexington Thursday night.

Porter also kept the Bison moving with 14 assists besides senior Ashlyn Randel sending out 20.

Sophomore Cali Crawford’s 14 kills topped three who crushed shots off that home floor 10 times or more.

Junior Jaylea Walgren jolted 11 past Lexington blocks and Bailee Foster 10.

“Bailee did her usual good job of being everywhere,” Hoins said. “Both Bailees.”

Senior Bailee Fawver resumed her libero hustle with 13 digs and mixed in three assists.

Sure, it wasn’t always pretty or perfect but McCook was happy to celebrate its first win of 2024.Lexington took the second set, 25-19, based on reporter scribbled notes since no final scores have been posted on nsaahome.org, maxpreps or any other internet site searched.

The third set was pivotal because Lex played to an early 6-6 tie.

Visiting fans were roaring and sensing perhaps momentum had really turned.

Not so fast.

Randel delivered one of her 20 assists to Crawford, whose tap past the Maids ignited a 5-0 Bison surge.

Crawford crushed another, then Foster went outside and sizzled off fingertips to make it 11-6.

Fawver nearly took one good facial on Lex’s next best swing, but she handled well enough for another pass which Foster finished perfectly.

Lexington didn’t lie down, even closing within 18-16 later in this same third set.

That’s when senior leader Randel delivered one of those 10 McCook ace serves.

Now it was Walgren’s turn again to send one through two blockers for the 20th Bison point.

When Walgren slammed another ball to that new floor, McCook was now leading 22-16.

Sophomre Morgan Griffin’s kill and a finally Crawford point capped the 25-20 triumph.

McCook took this momentum to build huge fourth-set leads reaching as large as 23-10.

The Minutemaids did tally six unanswered points yet never really got within striking range.

“We didn’t finish well,” Hoins concluded about the fourth set. “ We need to get better at that. But it’s good to get the first one.”
