YMCA project will help secure McCook's future

Friday, August 16, 2024

The YMCA of McCook has embarked on a $16 million capital improvement project, aiming to renovate and expand its aging facility to serve Southwest Nebraska and Northwest Kansas better. This ambitious effort, dubbed the “OUR TOWN, OUR Y, OUR FUTURE” campaign, is more than just a facelift—it’s an investment in the future of the community.

McCook has a long history with the YMCA, dating back to 1926. The current facility, built in 1982, has surpassed its intended lifespan, now showing the wear and tear of decades of service. The YMCA has been a cornerstone of community life, providing a space for youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. However, the need for modernization has become urgent. The facility’s mechanical systems are outdated, and the space no longer meets the growing demands of the community.

Recognizing this, YMCA leadership conducted a thorough investigation and feasibility study, revealing overwhelming community support for the project. To date, $15 million has been pledged, bringing the campaign within striking distance of its goal. With funds raised during the community phase being matched dollar for dollar, up to $750,000, now is the time for the public to rally behind this vital project.

The renovation will include an expanded gymnasium with an elevated walking track, a renovated indoor aquatic center, a modernized fitness and wellness center, a new youth development center, and outdoor playgrounds. These improvements will create a vibrant gathering place where people of all ages can come together for recreation, wellness, and community connection.

This project is not just a luxury—it’s a necessity. The YMCA has been a lifeline for McCook, offering programs and services that benefit not only residents but also those from surrounding communities. The only indoor pool within a 60-mile radius, the YMCA attracts swimmers and athletes from towns far and wide. The expanded and modernized facility will ensure that the YMCA remains a vital resource for the region.

As the YMCA approaches its 100th anniversary in McCook, this capital improvement project is a fitting tribute to its enduring legacy. It’s a chance for the community to come together, not only to preserve a cherished institution but to build a brighter, stronger future for all. Everyone has a personal “why” for supporting the YMCA—whether it’s the memories of youth sports, the need for a community hub, or the desire to see McCook thrive for generations to come. Now is the time to act, to ensure that McCook continues to move forward, with the YMCA leading the way.
