McCOOK, Neb. — – The YMCA of McCook is excited to launch the community phase of a transformational capital campaign to renovate and expand its current facility. The YMCA of McCook has been serving Southwest Nebraska and Northwest Kansas since 1926 in the areas of Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility. The OUR TOWN, OUR Y, OUR FUTURE campaign will create a modern, vibrant gathering place for all. The renovated YMCA will provide increased opportunities for wellness, recreation and community connection.

An aging facility with substantial deferred maintenance led YMCA of McCook leadership to initiate a comprehensive investigation into its current space in early 2021. After a thorough Building Analysis and Visioning Study that identified several deficiencies in the building’s mechanical systems, the organization made the decision to conduct a Feasibility Study in 2022 to test the community’s level of interest for an improvement project. With overwhelming support identified through the Feasibility Study, the organization elected to embark on a $16 Million Capital Campaign. To date, $15 Million has been pledged to the project since fundraising began in April of 2023. With over 90% of the funds raised, the YMCA is seeking public support to meet its project goal.

Thanks to generous support from the Graff Charitable Foundation and Community Hospital, funds raised during the community phase of the campaign are being matched dollar for dollar, up to $750,000.

The following revitalized features will highlight the capital improvement project: expanded gymnasium with elevated walking track, renovated indoor aquatic center, modernized fitness/wellness center, new youth development center and outdoor playground, dedicated social spaces for youth, families and community groups. Construction on the project will commence once the fundraising goal has been met and is expected to take 18-20 months.

“It’s no secret that community leaders are working together to see much needed progress in our town. We believe the timing is right to revitalize our YMCA, too. That’s why we are launching a capital campaign to transform our YMCA into a modern, accessible community hub that will engage young families and support people of all ages,” said CEO, Mitch Gross. “We invite the community to join us and our partners as we build on the strength of our incredible progress and ensure we are here for future generations.

“With your help, the YMCA will continue to make our community a more vibrant place to learn, grow, and thrive.”

  • Exciting improvements with the YMCA, proposed new Junior High School, Swimming Pool facility and other major projects coming about. That's a significant amount of bonds being "floated" to pay for all of this? The tax payer basis in the area doesn't seem to be expanding? Actually I think it's shrinking with the demographics. Maybe there's more $$ floating around than obvious to pay for all of these significant projects?
