McCook city employee killed in crash en route to landfill

McCook, Neb. — On Thursday morning, a City of McCook truck hauling trash to the J Bar J landfill south of Ogallala was involved in a fatal traffic accident. City staff was alerted to the incident around 7:51 a.m.

Upon gathering initial information, city staff confirmed with the Hitchcock County Sheriff’s Office that the accident involved a city truck and that the driver had died. The driver was identified as Wayne A. Cook, an employee at the City of McCook’s solid waste transfer station. His identity was disclosed after his next of kin were notified, as requested by the Hitchcock County Sheriff.

City staff are currently attempting to recover the semi and implement cleanup procedures. With assistance from the Hitchcock County Sheriff’s Office, the Nebraska State Patrol is leading the investigation. As of now, no further details about the crash have been released.
