The Family Table Project: Strengthening parenting communities in McCook
McCOOK Neb. - The Family Table Project was conceptualized by a group of dedicated women in McCook who recognized the importance of creating connections within the community for parents. The inaugural event is scheduled for tonight and subsequent gatherings will be held on the second Thursday of each month from 5:30 to 7:00 at the Methodist kitchen at 105 East E Street. However, this initiative is not affiliated with any religious organization.
At each monthly meeting, a guest speaker will present for approximately 20 minutes, followed by an opportunity for parents to engage with one another and delve deeper into the topic. As Jessica Meyer, one of the organizers, aptly put it, “Community is hard.” She further emphasized the challenges of identifying individuals to connect with.
The Table Talks Project aims to create a nurturing environment where parents can come together to share their experiences, provide mutual assistance, and gain insights from one another. They aim to strengthen family bonds and refine parenting skills through candid conversations and peer support. Childcare services will be available for your convenience, and dinner will be provided during the sessions, making it a valuable and convenient opportunity for parents.
One of the Family Table Project’s organizers, Caitlin Whitehead, CASA director, acknowledged the personal relevance of this project, expressing how she could have benefitted from such a resource when her children were younger—and even now. Reflecting on her experiences, she noted that some of her closest friendships developed from observing alternative parenting approaches. “I realized there’s different parenting than I learned,” she shared. The Family Table Project allows parents to step out of their comfort zones and establish meaningful connections with fellow parents.
Some topics that will be covered are:
• The importance of family dinner
• Establishing a routine
• Technology and creating boundaries
• Stress management
